Free family activities : Although you can spend a ton of money in New York, free family activities are just waiting to be enjoyed at no cost especially during summer vacations. Many fun places for kids in NYC provide lots of ways for you and your family to learn about New York’s history, see its famous architectural buildings and generally have a great time without spending lots of your hard earned cash. Here are a few free family activities that should keep wallets happy the next time you and your family visit the Big Apple or if you reside here want to take in a free adventure.
If you fancy sampling some of the culinary delights, NYC has to offer, head down to Union Square Green Market, where you can sample fresh fruit, vegetables, baked goods, cider and much more for free. There are always stalls that are eager to let you try their free samples.
There are also a huge number (way more that you’d think) of bars that offer free food if you buy a drink there. Here are just a few that stand out. Shelly’s (8-15 Wood side Ave at 58th St) If you buy yourself a drink here just before 5PM any day of the week, you get to help yourself to a wonderful spread of food , including meat filled pasta and also a few vegetarian options.
Another daily one is Harbor (290 Hudson St) This offers less traditional but equally as tasty food such as duck-fat popcorn, fried chickpeas and Chinese five-spice nuts all for the price of your drink. Dell’anima ( 38 Eighth Ave) only have their offers running on Friday and Saturday nights. Once you’ve brought a drink, you can help yourself a very generous selection of food including like grilled vegetables, risotto and bruschetta.
One of many fun free activities families NYC is watching a live performance in one of New York’s many parks. You can enjoy the finest drama, opera, dance and music performances at the free warm-weather concerts the city has during the summer months. At the Summerstage events, you can watch some of the young performers of tomorrow perform during one of the many lunch time concerts. If you fancy going, Summerstage can usually be found Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield right off the 5th Avenue and 72nd Street entrance to Central Park in New York City. Enter at 69th and 5th Avenue.
Summerstage isn’t just free lunch time concerts, In August you can also watch films in the open air cinemas: Selected films are decided beforehand by the organizers but on the last date, the film is picked by the viewers. Shows run for Aug 18-22 and start between 6 and 8pm.
The Brooklyn bridge park in Brooklyn offers families and anyone free kayaking every summer. Just show up and enjoy about 15 minutes of great family fun on the water. It does not matter whether you are a novice or seasoned Kayaker.
